Escaping Jersey pilot synopsis - (single camera dramedy)

Escaping Jersey is an edgy, coming of age dramedy told as a remembrance. A little bit Wonder Years,a little bit Ally McBeal, That's Life, and a little bit Sopranos.

Trenton, N.J., in late 1950s. Music of the era. Janice lives the typical teen-ager's life. The high points of which are seeing how much she can get away with and avoiding the dreaded belt when caught. Her middle class Italian-American parents are part of the "wait till your father gets home" generation.

Escaping Jersey is the goal for Janice. Escape from this dysfunctional family and home town. (before the word was popular) She envisions her life afterwards along the lines of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. The film becomes her bible, Audrey (Holly Go Lightly) her mentor. She skips school just so she can experience New York City through the ides of her idol.

For Janice, school is not an outlet. Teachers like Miss Eubanks are more interested in their obsessions with cleanliness than with actual learning. Like at home, Janice perfects the dodge. School just is one more reason to get out and live like Holly-Go-Lightly. She begins to plan for the day she has enough money and can slip out of the house never to return.
